About Irregular A: Ay/Ank

An Irregular Sound is a sound that you would not typically expect without knowing that particular grammatical exception.

The AY sound produces a Long Vowel A sound where the A says its Letter Name and the Y acts as a Silent Vowel to create that Long Vowel A sound. Some words with the Ay sound are: Day, Lay, May, Pay, Ray, and Say.

The ANK sound produces a Long Vowel A sound where the A says its Letter Name blended with the NK ending sound. Some words with the ANK sound are: Bank, Rank, Sank, and Tank.

To practice the Ay and Ank sounds there is a Ay story and a Ank story for your child to read in the Practice Reading Book 3 that correlate with the Ay and Ank words addressed in the video (Practice Reading Book 3 Pages: 32-39).

For additional practice, there are printable Ay and Ank Flashcards. With these Flashcards your child build various Ay and Ank Words. The Flashcards have the Ay and Ank Endings and Consonants to blend to the Endings so that your child practices reading Ay and Ank Words (Irregular Vowel Sounds Flashcards).
