The point of teaching Grammatical Exceptions is so that children can identify patterns in Grammar and use these patterns to figure out unfamiliar words.

For example, if a child sees the Y at the end of a word and knows the word “My.” The child may make the connection and figure out the word “by.”

When Y is at the end of a word it does not make the consonant sound and instead makes the Long E or Long I sound.
