Phonics is the using the sounds that letters make to read words.
In order for children to read using Phonics, children need to be able to identify all the letters in the Alphabet and know the sounds of the letters. Also, different letter combinations will result in letters producing different sounds in words.
Phonics is understanding the letter and sound correspondence in order to be able to decode unfamiliar words in text and read.
