Controlled R words are exactly that, words that are controlled by the letter R. What does that mean? Let me explain better through examples.

Controlled Ar words are words like: “Bar, Car, Far, Hard, Lard, Tar, and Star.” In these words the “Ar” produces the sound of the Letter Name “R.”

Long A Words that are not controlled by the letter R make the “air” sound and some examples of these words are: “Air, Fair, Care, Dare, Stare, and Scare.”

Controlled R Words with “Er, Ir, and Ur” words all make the same “er” like sound.
Some examples of “Er” Controlled R words are: “Water, Her, Later, and Winter.”
Some examples of “Ur” Controlled R words are: “Fur, Purr, Turn, and Burn.”
Some examples of “Ir” Controlled R words are: “Bird, Girl, and Third.”

Here are Long Vowels “Er,” “Ir,” and “Ur” words and they are not Controlled by the Letter R:
These “Er” words produce the “ear” sound: “Here, Peer, Steer, and Ear”
These “Ir” words produce the “I-er” sound: “Fire, Tire, Hire, and Wire”
These “Ur” words produce the “you-r” sound: Cure, Pure, and Furious”
