FirstStepReading.com is a step-by-step learning to read curriculum based on Phonics, Sight Words, and Grammar.

What is Phonics?

Phonics is the practice of teaching children the relationship between sounds and letters. When children understand letter sounds they are able to blend sounds together to read unfamiliar words in written text.

What are Sight Words?

Sight Words are often called Memory Words or High Frequency Words. These words are common words in the written language that should be memorized. Having Sight Words memorized helps with Reading Comprehension and Reading Fluency. When children recognize common words while reading and do not have to sound them out it helps children read more accurately and at a faster rate. When children are able to read faster, they are better able to understand what they are reading.

What is Grammar?

There are Grammar rules and Common Grammatical exceptions that children need to understand in order to decode words. When you teach a child to recognize certain letter combinations that produce certain sounds it helps the child learn to watch for those patterns while reading and to know what sounds those letter combinations will produce.

The educational practice of teaching through Phonics, Sight Words, and Grammar is commonly used in classrooms throughout the world.

Through teaching Phonics, Sight Words, and Grammar children learn to: sound out unfamiliar words while reading, read faster and with more accuracy, and look for patterns of letters that produce different sounds.
